Neurofeedback, also known as EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback, is a therapeutic intervention that provides immediate feedback from a computer-based program that assesses a client’s brain wave activity. It is based on the idea that many of the difficulties individuals experience are the result of imbalances in brain wave activity.
Neurofeedback can be used with children, adolescents, and adults as an adjunct with other forms of therapy. It has demonstrated benefits with the following symptoms and diagnosis: ADHD, Epilepsy, Anxiety, PTSD, Addictive Disorders, Depression, Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Migraines, Attachment Disorders, Autonomic Dysfunction, Chronic Pain, Chronic Fatigue Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Eating Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Premenstrual Syndrome, Sleep Disorder, Stroke, Tourettes/Tic Disorders,Relaxation, Performance Enhancement.
Neurofeedback is a method of training the workings of the brain so it functions in a healthier manner. This is achieved by repeated training sessions using a computerized neurofeedback program that reflects one's brainwave activity enabling the individual to reorganize and regulate brainwave frequencies. Neurofeedback assessment provides the provider with an idea of imbalances in brainwave activity that may be associated with reported symptoms. The trainings, typically 2x weekly, provides real time information about imbalances that may be associated with symptoms. This information is utilized by the provider to guide the client through trainings. The clients brain is reward through success in games utilizing visual and auditory cues. Simply by providing a mirror of an individuals brainwave activity, they can change it and alleviate unwanted symptoms they may be experiencing.
Neurofeedback therapy typically consists of twice-a-week sessions for an average of 20 weeks, depending on the severity, and the clients reception of the feedback. Some people need fewer sessions, while others require more. While you are sitting in a chair, the therapist will attach sensors to your scalp. A computer EEG program will process your brain signals and provide information about various brain wave frequencies. Using a program similar to a video game, you will watch the graphics or listen to music while your brain and central nervous system receive feedback signals from the program. The program will then begin directing your brainwave activity toward more desirable and controlled patterns. You will get immediate feedback from the program when your brainwave patterns improve. Between sessions, you should be able to notice changes in stress, sleep patterns, or mental clarity.
